    Touch rugby rules in 5 minutes: everything a beginner needs

    Six per side, no contact, six touches per set. Touch rugby's rule sheet is short — here are the five rules you actually need before your first session.

    Touch rugby is the friendliest entry point into rugby for adults who never played as kids. No tackles, no scrums, no rucks. Just two teams, an oval ball, and a 70-metre field. The rule book runs to forty pages but you only need five rules to hold your own at your first session.

    1. Six per side, no contact

    Six players on the field at any time. Defenders "touch" the ball-carrier with two hands anywhere from shoulders down — that counts as a tackle. No grabbing, no wrapping, no holding. If you make contact beyond a touch, the ref calls a penalty against you. The whole game is built on the assumption that defenders will let go the moment they connect.

    2. Six-touch turnover

    Each attacking set lasts six touches. After the sixth, the ball turns over to the other team. That's why touch is fast: you don't get ten phases to grind it out, you've got six chances to score before the other side gets a turn.

    3. The roll-ball restart

    After each touch, the touched player stops, places the ball on the ground at their feet, and steps over it. The "dummy half" (a teammate behind them) picks it up to restart play. Defenders must retreat 5 metres before they can move forward again — that's the space you attack into.

    4. Touchdowns score one

    Cross the opposition's try-line and ground the ball. One point. That's it — no kicks, no conversions. Most amateur sides play to a fixed time (40 minutes) rather than a points target, so the team that scores most touchdowns in the window wins.

    5. Free interchanges

    You can rotate players in and out as often as you want, no stoppage needed. Most teams play 4-minute rolling shifts so legs stay fresh. That's why a 12-player squad is enough to run a full 40-minute match.
